Every Ironman-branded race has time limits. Miss one and you are pulled from the course, so they matter most if you are racing your first 70.3 or full Ironman. Here are the standard limits as of 2026, and what to check before you commit to a race.

The standard cut-off times

Ironman 70.3 (half distance)

  • Swim: 1 hour 10 minutes
  • Bike: 5 hours 30 minutes after the start (swim, transition and bike combined)
  • Finish: 8 hours 30 minutes overall

Full Ironman

  • Swim: 2 hours 20 minutes
  • Bike: about 10 hours to 10 hours 30 minutes after the start
  • Finish: 17 hours overall

These are the common standards, not a guarantee for any one race. Individual races can set different or additional limits, so treat the limits above as a planning baseline and confirm against your race's athlete guide for the year.

Why the limits can differ by race

Courses, local permits and road closures all shape the schedule. Some races add intermediate checkpoints on the bike or run, and some tide-dependent swims shift their start times from year to year. The race's own athlete guide is the authority, and it can change between editions.

What to do with this if you are choosing a race

If finishing inside the limits is your goal, difficulty matters as much as distance. A hilly bike leg or a rough swim eats the margin that a flat, calm course leaves you. Use the rankings of the toughest and easiest courses to see how a course compares, and read our guide to the most beginner-friendly Ironman 70.3 races or how to choose your first Ironman 70.3.

If you want a rough idea of your own finish time, the race estimator projects it from your swim, bike and run splits against past finishers at that race.
